Direction provides the horizontal angle to the target from the observer, and its purpose is to orient the Fire Direction Control to the observer's view of the target. This creates a common line of fire between observer and guns, so when the observer states the direction, the FDC can set the guns to point along that line. Once this alignment is established, range fixes the exact point, and subsequent steps handle elevation and any corrections for wind or target movement. The other factors—wind and weather corrections, target movement, and elevation adjustments—are addressed after the initial bearing is established, not for establishing the initial orientation.
